DISSIDENT ARTS - NEW MASSES MEDIA: Listen

Bread and Roses

(The Flames of Discontent)
September 13, 2005
James Oppenhein/Caroline Kohlsaat
This song closes off our first album, "I Dreamed I Heard Joe Hill Last Night...A Century of IWW Songs"; we feel it does so in style. Our post-punk take on this true anthem of the labor movement is very popular with not only union crowds, but with all who attend our shows. The song is as important to workers' pride as any can be, but it especially speaks to the women who largely comprised the famed Bread & Roses Strike of 1912. Through physical assault, intimidation, harassment and more, the workers stood up to the factory owners and won this labor action which declared "We Want Bread But We Want Roses Too!"
